Winsor & Newton Demo Description

Oil Paint, Color and the Evolution of Painting Materials
Christine Hanlon, Demo Artist for Winsor & Newton Artist Outreach Program

For artists working in oils, alkyds or acrylics, this seminar will explore the pros and cons of various paints with a focus on the oil paint film.

This highly informative demonstration will help take the mystery out of oil painting, highlighting the high pigment load and excellent handling properties of the 119 Artist Oil Colours.

The sources, history and working characteristics of pigments will be discussed. How do oils, alkyds and acrylic paint films function and compare, and why are there so many different mediums? What do all these mediums do?! What are the rules of oil painting and what does "fat over lean" actually mean?

What’s the difference between a rigid and flexible support in terms of stability, and what’s the best ground to use? Do I need to varnish my paintings, and what is the proper way to do that?

What about solvents? What’s the best brush to use with my paints? What is linseed oil? Can I paint oils over acrylics? ** What are alkyds?

All of these questions and topics, along with your own questions, will be explored. The seminar will include some demonstration time, some hands on, plenty of time for questions, and a very generous free sample packet of professional materials!

**If time permits, the new Artists' Acrylics will be discussed, W&N's newest professional acrylic color which displays virtually no color shift from wet to dry.
