Satu Viitanen is a native of Finland, and travelled extensively in Europe as a young adult before coming to the United States in 1979. Early in her career, she was engaged in graphic arts design creating colorful wooden toys for toddlers as a co-founder of Lapland Toy Company. She devoted herself to the pursuit of visual arts in 1993 when she began painting on canvas, paper and wood using acrylic as her medium of choice. Satu began participating in juried art shows in 1996 and has been invited to display her art in galleries and showrooms in San Francisco, Los Gatos, Carmel, San Luis Obispo and Los Angeles. Her work can also be found in private collections around the world.
In the realm of paintings, her expertise lies in creating large tapestry-canvas wallhangings as well as free-standing folding screens of various sizes. Satu enjoys creating paintings with the detailed texture and feeling of Old-World patina surfaces reminiscent of ancient Pompeii, among other themes. Both her paintings and photography include nature and architectural themes.
Today, she displays her work in juried Bay Area art exhibitions as well as in selected galleries and other special venues. Satu has received numerous recognitions and awards for her works in both categories of paintings as well as her newest media,photography. One of her photographs, titled ‘Workbench I’, was selected in 2009 by the City of Gilroy for its permanent collection.
Satu offers original works as well as Giclée reproductions of original paintings in low-numbered, limited-edition prints embellished with hand-painted overlays. Her folding screens are mainly offered through private commissions. Her photography is available in various size archival-quality, limited-edition prints.
